For more than 100 years the oldest rack and pinion steam locomotives in the world have linked the narrow-gauge railway from Mayrhofen to Jenbach with Achensee. The journey of just over four miles, involving gradients of up to 16%, takes 45 minutes at a gentle plod and brings you directly to the landing stage at Seespitz.
The Achensee Boat Company was founded in 1887. Today the company owns four boats: "St. Benedikt", with a capacity of 300 people, "St. Joseph" with a capacity of 120 people, the "Tirol" motor boat for 40 people and the "MS Tirol" for 600 people. Boat cruises are availabe from May (Mother´s Day) through late October.
Walkers and hikers are truly spoilt for choice here with 150km of well-maintained and signposted trails etween 950m and 2300m above sea level. Take time out to explore the scenic beauty of the landscape on foot, listen to the chirping of birds, notice squirrels scurrying across the meadows, find rare and protected Alpine flowers, and revel in the awe-inspiring views of emerald green lake Achensee.
Lake Achensee is about as good an inland windsurfing location as can be found anywhere. You can have just as much fun sailing in a lake as out in the ocean.
Shale Oil is used in medicine as a remedy for treating some forms of skin diseases, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Pharmacologically, it has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and fungicidal properties.
